Polo TDI Wins Economy Run

A Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDi driven by Willie le Roux and Hein van der Walt was declared the overall winner of the 34th Total Economy Run, which finished at Thaba Nchu in the Free State on Saturday.

The team achieved a fuel consumption of 4.111 l/100km over the two-day 1 100km route and was also the winner of the award for the lowest consumption by a diesel-powered car, and of class J (for vehicles with diesel engines up to 1600cc).

Winners of the award for the lowest consumption by a petrol-engined car were motoring journalists Wynter Murdoch, a former winner of the same award, and car magazine colleague Leon Schnell. Their Daihatsu Charade 1 returned a figure of 4.596 l/100 km and won class A (for vehicles with petrol engines up to 1100cc).

Second in the diesel category were motoring journalist Geoff Dalglish and Hendri du Plessis in a class J Citroen C3 with a figure of 4,386 l/100 km. Roger Hills, a former winner of the Total Economy Run, and co-driver Gordon Stewart, were third in a diesel-powered class J Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDC with a consumption of 4.413 l/100 km.

Runners-up in the petrol category and winners of class E (for vehicles with petrol engines from 1601cc to 1800cc) were Total Economy Run veteran Willie Nel and his son Willem in a Toyota Prius. Their consumption was 4.620 l/100 km. Third overall and second in class A were former circuit racing driver and radio personality Jeanette Kok Kritzinger and Riette Wannenburg in a Citroen C1 with a score of 4.675 l/100 km.

Among the 13 class winners in a field of 43 vehicles and 18 different brand names were three from Daihatsu, and one each from Audi, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Tata, Toyota and Volkswagen.

Organised by the Pretoria Motor Club since its inception, the 34th Total Economy Run proved to be one of the most successful in many years, with Clerk of the Course Zybrandt Wepener paying tribute to the sponsors and the extensive marketing and promotional programme undertaken.

"They put in a lot of effort to make this important event a success," said Wepener.

We've done it again!
We would like to thank each and everyone of our loyal customers for  helping us achieve Club of Excellence Status.  This coverted award is presented each year by Volkswagen of South Africa to the top seven dealerships in the country.  To qualify, dealers need to meet extremely strict targets in New Car, Mastercar, Parts Sales and, most importantly, the Customer Satisfaction Index.

We are proud to say that Barons is the only Category A Western Cape Volkswagen dealer to have received this recognition for 2009.  And it's all thanks to the support we received from you!  We see ourselves as providers of peace-of-mind motoring and driving pleasure - not simply selling and servicing cars.  That's why independent research into customer satisfaction levels has rated us amongst the best in South Africa.  As the Barons group slogan says, "We'll never forget that they're people's cars".  Further proof is that our customer base has doubled in the last three years.  And the good news is we always have room for more.

So if you're thinking of buying a new Volkswagen or Mastercar - or need your car serviced or repaired - give us a call on (021) 799 4000.  We'll show you appreciation in the only way we know how - by providing outstanding customer service. We look forward to meeting you.
